RESEARCH & LEARNING
Researching community energy as a living socio-technical system
CyberEnergy Commons supports interdisciplinary research into how renewable-energy technologies, communities, institutions, data and operational practices interact in real settings. Our research combines engineering analysis, systems and cybernetics, field evidence, community participation and monitoring to generate practical knowledge for resilient and sustainable energy systems.
Research themes
Our research is organised around interconnected themes that examine both the technical performance of energy systems and the human, institutional and environmental conditions that shape their long-term effectiveness.
Energy Systems & Performance
Solar generation, battery storage, loads, reliability, energy management and system efficiency.
Systems & Cybernetics
Understanding feedback, interactions, governance, adaptation and the behaviour of interconnected technical and social energy systems over time.
Productive Use of Energy
Cold-chain services, device charging, enterprise activity and energy-enabled livelihood opportunities.
Community & Governance
Participation, ownership, operation, maintenance, decision-making and institutional arrangements.
Impact & Sustainability
Technical, social, economic and environmental outcomes, resilience, scalability and long-term sustainability.
Monitoring & Data
Operational monitoring, environmental sensing, datasets, analytics and evidence generation.
Current research programme
Current research is centred on the Gui Community Energy Project as a real-world environment for studying the interaction between renewable-energy infrastructure, productive energy use, community participation, monitoring and long-term sustainability. Research activities are being developed progressively as operational and community data become available.
Technical performance & monitoring
Evaluation of photovoltaic generation, battery behaviour, energy demand, system availability, cold-storage operation, environmental conditions and operational performance.
Community, productive use & impact
Baseline and subsequent follow-up assessment of energy access, cold-chain and charging services, livelihood opportunities, user experience, community participation and emerging socioeconomic outcomes.
Systems, governance & sustainability
Examination of feedback, operation, maintenance, governance arrangements, adaptation, community–technology interactions and factors affecting long-term resilience and scalability.
Methods & evidence
CyberEnergy Commons combines field observation, operational monitoring, community evidence and engineering analysis. Methods are selected according to the maturity of each project and the availability and quality of verified data.
Field & operational data
Measurements from energy systems, environmental sensors, cold-storage operation, service activity and other project monitoring sources provide evidence of real-world performance.
Community evidence
Surveys, interviews, stakeholder engagement, user feedback and field observations help examine community needs, participation, service use, governance and emerging outcomes.
Engineering analysis & modelling
Technical assessment, simulation, energy analysis, system modelling and data analytics are used to evaluate performance, identify constraints and explore improvement options.
Validation & learning
Findings are interpreted against verified project records, operational experience and community evidence, allowing lessons to inform system refinement, future research and scale-up decisions.
Research outputs
Research outputs are developed progressively from project activities and may include publications, datasets, student research, technical reports, monitoring records and other scholarly or practice-oriented materials. Outputs are listed according to their verification, publication and access status.
Publications & scholarly outputs
Journal articles, conference papers and other peer-reviewed or scholarly materials.
Datasets & monitoring data
Structured project, energy, environmental and community datasets prepared for analysis and validation.
Student research
Undergraduate and postgraduate research undertaken within or alongside CyberEnergy Commons projects.
Technical & practice resources
Reports, engineering documents, monitoring tools, field instruments, briefs and implementation learning materials.
Public listing of a research output does not necessarily imply public file access. Downloads remain subject to ownership, privacy, institutional, publication and security requirements.
